Coding Counts in Elementary!

Coding is one of the biggest "buzz-words" in education today, but how do we make it a meaningful practice and connect it to Virginia’s curriculum? Coding Counts teaches elementary educators how to use numerous methods of coding to connect curriculum with 21st Century Skills! Nothing engages students more than giving them a multitude of technology to express their learning. In this session participants will explore how to link SOL standards in grades K-5, and critical thinking skills by using different coding tools. Discover the ways that robotic technologies such as Sphero robots, Ozobots, Code N' Go Mouse, Osmo Coding, and drones can be useful tools in the classroom. However, since not all schools and classrooms have access to these types of technology, participants will also learn how to engage students in coding projects using simple iPad apps, Chromebooks, and laptops! Throughout the session each grade level will be broken down by the standards that are taught and the coding strategies that go along with them.
Starting in the primary grades, participants will see how to bring coding down to a basic level so that even our little learners will feel accomplished! Beginning with the connection that coding is a basic language of the 21st Century, participants will learn how coding can affect their classrooms. Explore how standards such as ordinal numbers, place value, following basic commands, map skills, retelling, sequencing, patterns, shapes, lifecycles, weather patterns, and more fit into a coding curriculum! During the session participants will use multiple ways of coding to teach K-2 SOLs, infusing lessons with both technology and the passion for learning!
For participants who focus on the upper elementary students, come see how grades 3-5 SOLs such as plant parts, longitude and latitude, geography, retelling, word problems, layers of the Earth, simple machines, force and motion, angles, and much more are explored and conquered by allowing students to “show what they know” in code. Even the most tedious standards can be brought to life with a robotic buddy, or an excellent app!
Participants will empower their super students by building their knowledge base of different coding languages and technology tools to express their learning. Participants will see how students are able to “choose their own technology” while teachers take a summative or formative assessment grade. By engaging students in code, even the most reluctant learners will find their “super powers” and be excited and willing to share their understanding of the VA SOLs.
In this BYOT session participants will learn how to use your own technology to super charge your teaching and create an engaging experience for all learners! With clear-cut lessons and ideas, participants will leave with a vast knowledge of coding and a toolbox to begin coding in their own classrooms and schools! Come check out why Coding Counts!
